The "only" way to make money with your website is if people can actually find you. You can have the best looking website in the world but if you don't get enough traffic then your website is nothing.
If your site is still new and you're not getting much traffic, don't worry too much because sometimes it's hard to get alot of traffic right away. Even if you submit your site to a search engine, it could take up to a month or a few months before it gets listed so patience is the key.
Search engines is the best way to get fresh traffic to your site, other ways to get traffic is by submitting your site to directories, exchange links with other sites and if you don't mind spending abit of money you can also buy traffic from some places.
To do a link exchange, the important thing is to exchange links with other sites in the same niche, in other words sites that have content related to your own. The best thing to do is send an email to the owner of the site to request a link exchange. This can be a very time consuming process but worth it because the more sites with the same niche that link to you, the better your search engine ranking becomes. You need to have a balance, what you want on your site is to have your old visitors coming back and and also new visitors (fresh traffic).
And always remember this, if you can't get a link exchange with a particular site then it doesn't matter because there's plenty of other sites out there where you can exchange links with, so don't feel shy to ask around for a link exchange.
